I am so proud of myself that I finally figured out how to add a picture! If anyone else is having trouble, you are not in the boat alone.
For my artwork I mainly used the sketch I completed during last week's class. I enjoy combining nature with man-made items. I read a wonderful poem once by a Latin American writer that described death as our return to the earth in such a beautiful way (at the moment I am unable to recall the poet). This poem had a great spiritual affect on me. Since then, I often combine these elements in my work. The still life in class greatly reminded me of this man/nature combination. During the museum time I was very influenced by the drawing/shading style of Alfred Hutty. I attempted to utilize these techniques in my work and will continue to work back into my drawing with more crosshatched shading. I love working in mixed media, so when Mary Lou requested this of us I set out to work with media I have never worked with in combination....soft pastels, charcoal, and various colors of rice paper. I have had a lot of fun with this piece. I know that it is not quite finished, but I am not quite sure what else I will do with it. I am going to put it aside for a few days and then take a fresh look. If anyone has any suggestions, I would love to hear them.

I wouldn't touch the gords if I were you, otherwise maybe some darks on the chair may give you what you want, or some yellow and white to the leaves on the chair, your choice, I love the over all composition. You made the chair your subject and chose a view that is very appealing. I like that you tore your edges of the paper can't wait to see how you will frame this ...will you keep the edges showing or matte over them??
Amy, that is a good piece. The colors go well together.
This is probably not what you want to hear but I think a good idea would be to incorporate some of the lines form the poem into your work. If the poem influenced your work this much then I think that including lines or key phrases in your art work would be appropriate. You do not have to make it obvious that the text is in your work but write it in a dark color and use it as shadows or vice versa, write it in a light color and make it a highlight. You need to do what you feel comfortable with but this is something to ponder on future works that are influenced by a poem or a reading of some sort. I do love what you have so far...I agree with Roxanne that you have a marvelous composition. Great work!!
I believe Josh's suggestion is great about adding text. Your textures are very dominate with the use of paper. Looking forward to the finished piece.
I "enjoy" looking at your piece. It has a happy quality. I know the feeling comes from the all the little spirals. I visited New Zealand a few years ago and found this image everywhere. I began to research it and discovered that it is one of the 5 basic “universal symbols”, meaning that it is used in ALL cultures from earliest times, regardless of contact, and means exactly the same thing in every one. It is the symbol for life. No wonder your picture is so uplifting.
It is a fine, strong and yet lyrical image that does not require change.
However, consider:
I like Josh's idea to put some of the poem. Could it be added to the edges or made part of a frame?
Was the picture cut off at the base of the chair and whites?
