I often use process documentation as well. This picture is actually, the idea (top) and the first hour or so of Digital Painting (bottom). Integrating the textures of the gord (did I spell that right?) into the face is very important. I will have to make a special brush to do it, but I think I can manage it. After I complete the digital painting, I will print out the image on large format paper and transfer the colored side to some high-quality paper using soft-gel acrylic medium. I will then finish the piece by drawing the right side using the still life drawings we did as a reference. This may or may not work as I planned, including the face. I sometimes go overboard and do too much. I may even cut it out completely, but it is always good practice.

You might consider using clear caulk as the transfer medium...I have found that it works much better than gel medium because it is stronger and you don't have to put as many coats. I let it dry over night, then dampen it with a sponge and remove the paper.
cool piece, I really like the guys stare
Very interesting stuff...new method to me.
Jim, that's hot.
Jim,
I really like the idea of using technology to help establish a design/composition. I think it is great to utilize technology to enhance art and/or come up with a design that can be created through other media. There is a project that we do with our beginning art class in which students take a picture of themselves, manipulate it in Photoshop and then redraw that image onto a sheet of drawing paper. The students are then able to go into the deliniated areas with different mark-making techniques with pen and graphite. The pieces are highly successful and students are frantically working throughout the entire class period. It is a great way to incorporate a small amount of technology with traditional art mediums and it is very personalized to the students.
You know, that is what is so great about this class. Not only did I try something similar to Ashley's project last term, but I had great success too. I wish I had known about that much earlier. Now, because of this class, we can borrow and steal all these tried and true ideas.
Your digital work will add a unique media to our exhibit. The juxtaposition of the face with the face in the landscape provides a contrasting views. I would like to see where this leads you. Good luck
